Our Mission
Smart home automation is genuinely powerful — but the internet is full of guides that were clearly written by someone who has never touched the actual hardware. We built Smart Home Toolbox to fix that.
Every guide on this site comes from hands-on experience. We buy the devices, connect them to Home Assistant, run them through their paces, and document what actually works. If something only works under ideal conditions, we'll say so. If a "popular" product is a pain to integrate, we'll tell you that too.
No spec-sheet regurgitation. No vague "best practices." Just the stuff that works in a real home.
Why Trust Us
200+ Devices Tested
We've personally installed, configured, and lived with over 200 smart home devices — thermostats, locks, sensors, hubs, lights, and everything in between.
Home Assistant Power Users
Our home runs a full Home Assistant instance with Zigbee, Z-Wave, and local integrations. We know the quirks, the breaking changes, and the workarounds.
Honest Reviews
We call out products that underdeliver. If a device doesn't work well with Home Assistant, we won't pretend otherwise to protect an affiliate relationship.
Real-World Results
We share actual energy savings, reliability data, and failure modes from months of use — not just first-impression unboxing takes.
Our Setup
We run Home Assistant on dedicated hardware — not a Pi stuffed in a closet, but a proper machine with enough headroom to run dozens of integrations without hiccups. The network is built on UniFi, which means reliable VLAN segmentation for IoT devices and real insight into what's actually talking to the internet.
We have 200+ devices across Zigbee, Z-Wave, and WiFi. That range matters: it means we know where each protocol excels, where it falls apart, and why the "just use WiFi for everything" answer is usually wrong for anything beyond a handful of devices.
Every device we write about has been installed in this home, integrated into Home Assistant, and run for long enough to see how it behaves over time — not just on day one.
Why We're Different
Most device reviews happen in a controlled environment — a desk, a demo setup, maybe a single room. That's not how smart home devices actually live.
Every review on this site comes from a real home: walls that interfere with Zigbee mesh, a network with 80+ other devices competing for bandwidth, automations that have to survive family members who don't care about the tech. If a device works here, it'll work in your house. If it doesn't, we'll tell you exactly why.
